about the breed

Australian Labradoodles are an incredible breed with traits that make them an ideal companion for many families. Below is everything you need to know about this beloved breed.

  • Why “Australian” Labradoodle? This title differentiates the breed from the “American” Labradoodle.

From Australian Labradoodle Association of America:

“The original intent behind the breed was to create a canine companion that was highly intelligent, easily trainable, and allergy-friendly. By breeding a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle, Wally Conron (Australia’s Royal Guide Dogs manager), created the first Australian Labradoodle. Over time, with purposeful breeding, other breeds were also infused to bring a careful selection of temperaments and physical characteristics into the breed. Today the rich lineage found in the Australian Labradoodle’s DNA is a multi-generational infusion of Poodle, Labrador Retriever, and English and American Cocker Spaniel. While Labradoodle is still part of the name, Australian Labradoodles differ from other “doodles” in appearance, temperament, and coat type. ALAA Australian Labradoodles have consistency in appearance, temperament, intelligence, trainability, and a low- to no-shedding coat. Designed for human companionship, Australian Labradoodles make a loving, loyal, fantastic addition to families.”

  • Australian Labradoodles are known for their well mannered and magnetic temperament. The ALAA describes them as clever, comical, sociable, and joyful. They love people and should approach them with a happy countenance. and friendly manner. They are easy to train and sociable. They possess the ability to ”know” their handler’s emotional state, making them incredibly intuitive.

  • Australian Labradoodles are non-shedding, and come in two different coat types (fleece or wool) and have many different colors. Their coat does’t produce the typical oils of other dogs, making them easier to groom and less smelly. They have a teddy bear face, and when groomed should have visible eyes, longer hair on top, and a coat that is not overly groomed. Regular brushing at home is recommended to avoid matting, but their coats are much less prone to tangling than other doodles. We recommend bringing your dog to a trusted groomer for a trim every 4-6 weeks.

Australian Labradoodles need exercise, both mental and physical. These dogs are incredibly smart and highly trainable. They will learn quickly. We plan to use Puppy Culture techniques to socialize and desensitize pups to sound and smells.
